There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from debt that never seems to shrink — where every rupee borrowed just to survive turns into a heavier rupee owed later. Ajaybhai knew that exhaustion well.
Ajaybhai and his brother had little formal education between them and made their living through scattered daily-wage work. Making ends meet at home was hard enough on its own. But it was the moments in between — when an urgent need forced them to borrow money at high interest — that made life genuinely difficult. The interest on those loans would pile onto an already stretched household, making the road ahead even harder to walk.
Through the funding KRSF provides to VSSM, people are able to access interest-free loans to start a small business of their own. When Ajaybhai learned about this, he approached VSSM’s field worker, Sunilbhai, for applying.
He and his brother had already picked up a practical skill — repairing gas stoves and mixers. With an interest-free loan through the KRSF–VSSM self-reliance program, they were able to properly start that work as a business. Steady effort paid off, and today Ajaybhai earns between ₹500 and ₹700 a day with ease.
He puts it simply, and with visible pride: “If KRSF and VSSM hadn’t stepped in, life would have become very difficult. Earlier, if we borrowed ₹30,000 on interest, we’d have to pay back ₹50,000. Now we’ve stopped borrowing on interest altogether. Sunilbhai taught us how to save, and our life has genuinely improved.”
What stands out just as much as his own turnaround is what he’s chosen to do with it. Ajaybhai now donates ₹100 every month to VSSM, and says, “My wish is that very soon, I’ll be able to give ₹200 every month, consistently.” It isn’t a large sum in absolute terms — but the spirit behind it is priceless.
